Climate

Hvar weather is characterized by mild winters and warm summers. The yearly average air temperature is 16 °C (61 °F), 686 mm of precipitation fall on the town of Hvar on average every year and the town has a total of 2800 sunshine hours per year. For comparison Hvar has an average of 7.7 sunshine hours per day while Dubrovnik has 7.2. The sea temperatures average from the lowest readings in February of 14 °C (57 °F) to their warmest during summer, when the sea temperatures usually stay between 23 °C (73 °F) to 27 °C (81 °F).

The island of Hvar, with the city of Hvar, is situated on the Makarska Riviera. It gets the most hours of sunshine in Croatia and many hotels offer a sun guarantee: when it rains you get a discount. During the winter these hotels offer a ‘no snow guarantee’. When it does snow your overnight stay is free. Winters are mild and wet, but still offer great views of the Adriatic. Hvar is characterized by a mountain range that stretches out over the centre of the island. On the plateau between the places of Stari Grad, Vrboska and Jelsa grapes are cultivated for the local wine. The muggy summer evenings are best spent on one of the terraces watching the sunset out over the blue sea.
